Historic Potteries Superfund Sites

All RED locations on the map (listed below) are located within the Historic Potteries Superfund Site in East Trenton, which was added to the EPA National Priorities List in 2025 due to widespread lead contamination. In addition to the marked sites, 143 occupied residential homes were also found to have elevated lead levels and are included in the shaded region above.

Key Locations Frequented by Children: 

1. Sony Vereen Park: 
Lead soil levels exceeding EPA 200 mg/kg benchmark and goes up to 3080 mg/kg (tested Jan 2024), EPA started restoration work in Sep 2024 by installing grass, clean soil, and mulch. Currently undergoing further remediation under EPA’s second removal action (RV2). 

2. Breunig Avenue Park
Lead soil levels exceeding EPA 200 mg/kg benchmark and goes up to 757mg/kg (tested Jan 2024), EPA started restoration work in Sep 2024 by installing grass, clean soil, and mulch. Currently undergoing further remediation under EPA’s second removal action (RV2).

3. Grant Avenue Park
Lead soil levels exceeding EPA 200 mg/kg benchmark and goes up to 553mg/kg (tested Jan 2024. Currently undergoing further remediation under EPA’s second removal action (RV2).

4. Ulysses S. Grant Intermediate School Playground
Lead soil levels exceeding EPA 200 mg/kg benchmark and goes up to 653 mg/kg (tested Dec 2023/Jan 2024), EPA temporarily restricted access to areas where lead was found and completed its first removal action (RV1)

5. Former East Trenton Library
Lead soil levels exceeding EPA 200 mg/kg benchmark (tested Jan 2024), EPA completing temporary remediation (Oct 2024) and is listed among Historic Pottery sites currently undergoing Superfund clean-up
